Splurging for our Country’s future!

for everyone
Splurging for our Country’s future!

How can you be splurging when many people in our nation are suffering?”

To be fair, initially it SOUNDS correct; especially when the logic calls us that we should share scarce non renewable resources.

In reality everything we consume is the fruit of someone else’s labor. People organize firms that create products and services to survive. Most products are produced and reproduced on a renewable basis. Contrary to the common saying that splurging is bad – it actually does the opposite. Why are some nations rich? – Because they create and sell more products and services, or the package these products and services. If no one buys- no one sells, then the people become poor. Creativity sells. Creativity makes money.

Example: JapanChinaSingapore and Taiwan, these countries have less than 15% agricultural land but the transactions on these nations are staggering

What is needed in our country is to educate the people of the higher spirituality and humanity of consumerism rather than bad rep of materialism promulgated by some of our religious, social and family members. We need to do far less emphasis on charity more emphasis on productive consumerism.

Splurging is good when done within one’s means and when it is used for a fruitful end.

Lets say I indulge myself in a weekend of material delights and I booked a presidential suite at the Peninsula Manila. That Action of mine benefited more deserving people than giving it to your average charitable institution. Let’s do the breakdown.

I check in this five star hotel, running the hotel are employees and managers of the best caliber. They are the most hardworking and productive workforce that create the unique first class hotel experience. To reward these men and women we give them generous wages. Students in Colleges get motivated to strive for the best in their trades because they know that excellent high paying hotels exist and only employ the best. The Hotel employs accountants, chefs’ staff, chauffeurs, managers etc. Most of these people have spouses and at least 1 child dependent on this hotel for their income. This income sends their kids to school, pays the rent, pays for food etc.

Circulating money is good for the economy; it keeps mouth’s fed, production moving and services in demand. I have nothing against saving for the future but really your money actually loses value in the bank, because of inflation and opportunity costs- go ahead research and be more of an investor rather than a saver!

I was reading a book on post was Western Gemany and how they got the economy went back to normal, the finance ministers made new money for circulation and pretty soon this money circulated to build infrastructure and services. We should emphasize this, NO! not emphasize we should take it to a higher degree and we should make it tantamount to salvation- we should proclaim that your consumer habits will be the bread and butter and that when we create creative and quality products and services we give meaningful employment to people.

Let us consume meaningfully, splurge without guilt if it is within your means. Save; invest so when you reap the benefits you can splurge again. Wealth is good. Consumerism is more holy than most of our bishops who rant and rant but never proposed anything concrete; proclaiming a message that they can feed the world when they cant feed a hundred.

 on charity:

Charity is good, if it is used sparingly and when targeted to the most promising and deserving yet compromised individuals in our society. If human values were likened to nutrition; charity would be like fats, a little would be great as it is the tastiest and most flavorful indulgence but anything more than that creates problems. Too much emphasis charity makes a population which is needy, incompetent and lazy simply because we let the undeserving marginalize fellowmen survive! Too much charity is an insult to human skill and capability; let me say this fact. All humans are 99.99% genetically alike to each other but our different value system create to 1,000 +% difference in success in life. It makes the class division wider as it reinforces society roles.

In our nation’s example the well off and the middle class are often criticized for being scrooges and uncharitable. Many of our opinion leaders, particularly politicians and some church leaders put overemphasis on charity as the only way to alleviate the sufferings of the poor. For example the recent proposed dole out on families earning less and the subsidiary on electricity and the food subsidies on the poorest families create a culture of dependency. It get me furious that while we work our asses off, the government gives off free lunch to the parasites of society. This gives them incentives to be content with just the way they are and reproduce like rabbits; I would have agreed to the dole out system as long as once they fall in line to the subsidies, castration is the ultimate price.

I will write more on this in another blog entry.

Why I got furious at a reply in an e-group.

for everyone
A month ago I joined an email group composed of DLSU alumni who were concerned in helping our nation develop and to address Philippine Social ills such as corruption et al. Most of the members of this group are middle aged professionals in companies as well as NGO leaders.
In one of the discussions, they were discussing ways on how we can eliminate corruption in this nation. I got excited and proposed two theories
1. The theory of natural "maturation" of the people leading to good governance
          - In this first theory I hypothesized that the people are slowly but surely improve for the better as they get tired of incompetent candidates. Evidence of this trend are the following, Actors losing to elections, some honest politicians getting positions in power. The growing discontent and the clamor for more honest leaders.
2. The concept of enlightened dictatorship
        - This theory comes close to the singapore and malaysia model where an enlighten leader will set solid and strict rules and propel us to economic prosperity. This theory is possible because a few leaders are projecting themselves to be such this becomes a real possibility in the medium term.

Okay back to the story
- I first suggested that in order to see results immediately we must have the benevolent dictatorship type of leadership. He should be a disciplinarian, professional and honest. knowing the Filipino tendency to support "heroes" this type of leader is possible.

ROUND 1
Then there's this middle aged man attacked my point of view and said to do this will give rise to dictatorships such as the marcos regime, hitler and the corrupt dictatorships of Latin america. Criticism is good, as long as its un constructive but this is offensive and he didn't take heed of various Asian examples I made namely China's Deng Xiaoping, Lee Kwan Yew and Mahatir. But no- he just shot down the idea.
He suggested that social upheaval must be the only way, he mentioned the glorified French revolution and the war of the American Colonists against unjust British Taxation
I then Corrected him that the french revolution did not lead to a stable and economically prosperous France- (the french got the monarchs back then tried Napoleon Bonaparte who led them with a few years of glory then left the nation Bankrupt). With regards to the American revolution I said it is tue but I asked him for an explanation on why a benevolent dictatorship won't work. - No answer from him

ROUND  2
I tried to be civil and tried to build up the idea that the gradual maturation of the Filipino people is indeed the way for the improvement of our political situation and the our economy.
He mentioned that it is a far out chance because of our people's decadence. He lamented on how our lawmakers don't even know the preamble of our Constitution and that our laws don't work. He criticized our people (I'm guilty) for not knowing it.
I was quite busy so I wasn't able to reply right away. It was on a while ago where I got infuriated on what the bastard said.

ROUND 3
In one reply he said that he personally doesn't see how our country will be in the developed world status and what he mentioned afterwards was that we were almost beyond redemption because God is not in our laws. Damn he was a hopeless wreck lamenting and lamenting.

I decided to kill the pessimism.

My reply was:
I do see ourselves in a real position of being a developed nation. We have so many business opportunities here; in fact its actually quite easy to get rich in the Philippines! Another thing is that the Philippines is the BEST place to be rich. The measure being a wealthy nation is through economic status and there is so much potential in our nation, true there will always be laggards but many will reap the potential. I've personally seen people getting out of poverty and it is real.

Our generation will achieve more than your generation who didn't  do the job well. This generation is more outgoing, more practical and more optimistic than pessimists like you. I will be rich hahahahaha.

Love: Are you the Realist or the Romantic?

for everyone
Since this is an open blog/ semi debate please feel free to contribute your thoughts=)

Here's my Take:

The Point of View of Romantic.
I was once one of the greatest romantics of all (ahhh yes bach in high school), believing that finding the right one is the destined interplay of fate and circumstance, and that everything conspired to fall into their own place. I believed before that relationships are more of a magical chemistry than a matter of choice. I remember it just took just one person to make yourself complete and as much as possible you must make the fewest mistakes in getting to that special someone.

Romantics find it hard to let go, they have so much faith invested in that significant other and they always see the good side and try to bring it up. The believe in the credo that someone is who is worth it is worth giving all. In my lifetime I have met a few true hardcore romantics, men who have never given up and even one who courted this girl for 9 years. I admire their effort but I ask at what cost? Everything has an opportunity cost and forgive me for having to put it in a more familiar term, I have "diversified" for greater learning. Perhaps the romantic will say it is better to be happy with what you have. I don't really know, I didn't remain a romantic for long pretty soon I embraced  pragmatism and now i have a more realistic approach in romantic affairs.

The point of View of A realist:
Romance is but a function of our Human Nature and social behavior. Your romantic partner would probably belong to the same social class as you belong but for men their selection of partners can be variable with a positive correlation to the social status of the man. I do nt believe in the "one", but I believe that in any given population of single women, few of them will have the critical traits needed for a workable relationship it is just that the probability gets into play. I don't believe in soul mates, if it ever existed we would be attracted to just one person and everyone will have his/her fair share of partners. This is not the case; some men and women are sexier, more datable and have more exciting love life's than others, this indicates that they have probably mastered the evolutionary mating game above the the average joe or jane. In don't believe in strong attachment, If I would have to trade love life for career it will take me just 1 week to make up my mind. I believe that love is more of a choice, a created opportunity and that you can find it in whatever situation you are in. I have seen it, why is it then that friendlier, more confident and more successful guys find love in more opportunities than the average joe? I see more value in constantly dating interesting women than locking yourself into one for a long time- especially in youth. A realist knows that time is fleeting and utilizes dating as a tool for overall learning and well roundedness.  Ironically love isn't that romantic anymore.

Some opportunites amd improvements in a time of expensive fuel.

A not so serious collection of thoughts and comments...

"Necessity is the mother of all invention"

And invention is the play of innovation and creativity.

High fuel prices therefore gives necessity to find ways to mitigate the financial stress while providing opportunities in other industries as well as the perfect situation to enhance your social/dating life.

1. Less Traffic in our roads
It is noticeable, my rush hour morning drive to the office is 15 minuets less due to less traffic! this improvement can actually save me up to 10% on fuel consumption daily, and although it is still not enough to offset the fuel price which has escalated more than 55% since April, less stress and more productivity is a result. Which means I have more time to use fooling around bwuhahahaha.

2. Incentive to develop alternative sources of fuel.
Biofuel, solar fuel, geothermal, wind, etc etc. The bottom line s that these alternative fuel systems will mitigate high oil prices, lessen our import bill and most of all give meaningful employment to thousands of professionals, employees and workers. In example if we develop our biofuel industry we will create a demand for farmers, agricultutalists, site managers, plant managers, office headquarters staff, office managers, accountants and a CEO (ahem). We recirculate our currency and utilize our manpower effectively. Many of our skilled countrymen need not travel abroad to work on a petroleum installation. If we invest in solar, wind we create a trend for renewable energy and science courses will be in demand!

3. Less Annoying college drag racers

I'm not saying that working people don't drag race- they do but since time is always an important issue and the legal implications of doing something illegal, they are not much of a problem. It is the spoiled college kiddos with their set up noisy cars that were the headache since my years in college time. They race when they feel like it causing a ruckus! They are 120kph road hazards. Noisy, bossy, disturbing even the peace in our village there's nothing to like with these irresponsible kids. Since gas prices have gone up, their school allowance wont be enough for their race gas hahahahahaha.

4. More incentive to carpool

When I was in college, there was a carpool organized by graduates from an all girls school based in alabang.

I was in that carpool.

Some guys were there too.

The boys made the girls' college life a little happier and vice versa

While it was necessary to save on fuel costs, second agendas can co exist harmoniously

4.1 More incentive to get people in a party to ride with or ride with you home
Its a common scenario that every time a party ends people ask each other where they go home and how are they getting home. If the party was a great, this provides the perfect opportunity to extend yourself and bond with your acquaintances- or the person you are hitting on.

For guys: Remember that a hidden intention cannot stand on its own, a valid reason for practicality justifies the move.

e.g.
"Hey cheska* don't let your driver pick you up anymore I also live in alabang; you can ride with me"

*Fictional person

5. Barkada outings can be more fun!
A few years back some barkada outings were made using a convoy system, while this makes for a really wicked "wolfpack" for all guy barkadas it is impractical and some people automatically ride only with certain persons. High fuel prices encourage cans and even chartered transport services. The result is a noisier but more fun roadtrip!

6. A great excuse for busy boyfriends

" Awww sweetie I'd love to go but I'm saving for this special date with you and to do this I need to cut down on my gas bill"

A few hours of additional freedom...

7. A good time for women to know how well their hubbies or suitors manage their finances
Friends, lets all be practical and cast aside the Romeo and Juliet for the moment.

We all know that no finance= no romance
I am not saying that relationships are materialistic by nature by lets face it money facilitates important purchases and activities (movies, flowers, Le Souffle dates, Biglang liko taxi) . For post college women looking for a sustainable relationship, observing how a man manages his finance gives you clues on how he will manage his finances when; heaven forbid- you decide to tie the knot! The bottom line is that high oil prices provide the best testing ground on the financial management skills of the guy.

8. Less nightouts and more House Parties!
I have nothing against a good saturday night at the most happening place or club- or even a nightclub! I would like to admit however that as a metro southerner I have a certain bias towards house parties. High gas prices make it expensive to rove around the metro and it encourages more financially friendly house get togethers and house parties.Grocery Booze is way cheaper than club booze too.

Everything will fall into place

I know what I want.
Wealth. Prestige. Influence
Also the ability to make a difference in this world.
I want to inspire people and be a catclyst of cultural and value change. I want to be a tycoon known not only for wealth but a mover of society. I want to eliminate fatalism, lazyness and dependency. I want to replace defective cultures, thoughts, policies, religions with genuine pragmatism and humanism.
I want the perfect mix of materialism and spirituality.
The end always justified the means, its just that some ends are greater than others.

What if? - The Spanish Never Came to the Philippines Part 1

Its always nice to look at our heritage better yet it is better to understand why our heritage is such and the reasons why we became like this as a people. In an effort to use my understanding and to unleash some creative vibes, lets recreate our history and remove the Spanish colonization from the picture.
What is the Spanish never came?
1. To those with Spanish lineage or ancestry, even in the most minuscule part- you do not exist.

But Seriously now, lets turn back time and see the era just before the Spaniards came. The Philippines did not exist. We were a a land governed with Sultanates Rajahs and Chiefs with marked territories. We would never be as large are we are now, the biggest territory will be the Sultanate of Sulu, because they own Sabah, the Sultanates of Mindanao will be the most powerful in terms of land and military might. The rest will be Island nations. Imagine living in the Island Nation of Cebu, IloILo, Bacolod. Perhaps living in the State of Pampanga or the Nation of Ilocos, Quezon, etc...
Wait.... Many of those places wouldn't have those Spanish names...
Given the absence of the Spanish Occupation we well undergo the warring States period, Especially in Luzon where there is no confederation of Sultanates (Think of Malaysia and Mindanao) to maintain the established peace and order. Like Chinese and Japanese history, we will undergo a phase where a dominant ruler will emerge after at least 50 years of conflict. That ruler can consolidate the island or luzon into a nation and perhaps expand n the nearby Visayas Islands.
The rule will be autocratic yet disciplined, we would have had plenty of trade with our Asian Neighbors such as China, Japan and maybe even among each other. It was noted that Early Filipinos were excellent craftsmen and traders selling pearls, ornaments, batik fabrics to the Chinese and Japanese. Our countrymen would have been more industrious, productive and honest. The Chinese traders returned only a few times every year to trade and receive payment, that would be equivalent to giving at least 90 days terms for payment.
I recall reading UP Professor Landa Jocano's "A History of the Filipino People" and he mentioned that Spanish economic policies namely the polo y servicio, centralized trade, forced propagation of products did not give any work incentives for the Filipinos, Craftsmen were paid poorly for their excellent crafts and the Spanish Style feudal system was established. The elites were abusive and lazy. This made the Filipino indolent and Lazy. Perhaps if the Spaniards did not come we would be more in tune with our crafts and would have been more industrious.

I will continue this blog thoughout the week.

Our exporters recently complained that our strong peso has dampened their trades. Our workforce salary is becomming less competitive than our neighbors India, China, Indonesia and Thailand. Our competitiveness is corelated to our efficiency and cost to produce goods, we market ourselves too much as a country for outsourcing. We make so much free port zones and lessen our trade barriers. All seems good, yes?

Maybe not!

Imagine a country where the cost of labor is arounf 700 pesos per hour.
Where its next to illegal to fire an employee
Logistically distant with very little investor incentives.
Hotels that charge an equivalent of 26,000 pesos per night- yet with less amenities and 20% smaller rooms than our very own New World renaissance Hotel.
Yet
Sells leather bags that has enough value to buy 100 grams of pure gold
(An adult cow sells for 40,000 pesos here)
The raw material costs for the scents is really less than 400 pesos ( I know coz I had a discussion with a chemist)
Manages to get 76 million tourists as of 2007
Is top 6 or 7 in the worlds Exporters list

By selling creativity and experience....

All economics books would say its headed down but marketing books will herald its triumph.

Forecasting Party Guests: Using Probability Estimation

Forecasting Party Guests: Using the Probability Estimation.

Let’s face it, inviting guests is quite easy but getting confirmations and attendance estimates can be quite a challenge. Some Confirm the same day of the receiving the invitation, some a few days after, some a few days before the event and some don’t get to confirm. Another challenging aspect is when guests say maybe, or we will give “best effort” these make it more of a challenge as hosts want to give the best celebration at the “just right” budget.

I borrow this probability equation from two disciplines from my background (although this principle is applicable to dozens of areas), production management and strategic management, throughout the years it has proven itself quite reliable, although it is always wise to prepare up to 25% more as extra depending on the occasion because of party crashers etc.

Guest Forecasting Equation.

Step 1: Make a list of your invited guests and friends, romantic partners and friends they may tag along

Example:

            Irene
Mike (In the case of spouses/bf/gf tab one line)

            Adam
Anna               Vince (In the case of friends tagging along use double tab)

            Maricel
+ 3 (If you do not know who will go among your guest’s friends, make a numerical estimate then use double tab)
            Jacob

            Sylvester

            Giselle

Step 2: Assign Probabilities

Where 1 = 100%
            a. People who have said they Can go to your occasion
            b. To Party Planners

Where .60 = 65%
            a. people who say they will be late, some get too exhausted to go toone  celebration after another
            b. Boyfriends/Girlfriends or spouses of friends who they say are coming and asked if they can tag along their hubbies
            c. friends of your friend whom s/he says will definitely go

Where .50 = 50%
            a. sure of going, for friends who are close but say maybe
            b. Boyfriends/girlfriends or spouses of friends whom your friend didn’t mention                           will go

Where  .30= 30% sure of going

                        a. for friends who are extremely busy
                        b. new acquaintances/friends who said maybe
                        c. friends of friends that are inseparable with your invited friend tag along
                        d. friends of friends who

Where .20 = 20% sure of going
                        a. For people say they will drop by if they have time

Where .1=10%
                        a. friends of friends who may go but your friend will only drop by if she                            has time

Step 2: Give Extra Contingency for Food or Budget whichever is Applicable

15% Extra Contingency
            a. for private dinner parties
            b. for outings with close friends
            c. for private home parties with your close circle of friends
            d. for DVD marathons, gimmicks etc.

22% Contingency
            a. If you have a home party and you mention to your guests they can tag people along
            b. for dinners which are not so exclusive
            c. for night outs and clubbing

35-40% contingency
            a. For wild parties and occasions where the more is merrier
            b. For Halloween Parties
            c. For drinking sessions and you just invite like mad

100% Contingency
-          If you declare an open house party- free

Step 3: Make the List and Assign the Values

            Irene =1
                        Mike =.65

            Adam =1
                                    Anna =1                     Vince=.5

            Maricel =1
                                    + 3 guests = .5  +.5 +.5 ( for three guests you add 3 probabilities)

            Jacob= .3

            Sylvester= .65

            Giselle= 1

Step 4: Sum it all Up

            1 + .65 + 1 + 1 + .5 + 1 +.5 +.5 + .5 +.3 +.65 + 1

= 8.6 guests

Step 5: Always round up

= 9 guests!

Step 6: Multiply by contingency

In this case we assume a 22% contingency

9 x 1.22 = 10.98

Step 7: Prepare Budget or Food

Prepare Budget or Food for 11 people!

Note: This excersise becomes more cost effective in larger parties where at least 25 people are invited for; small parties it may not be worth the trouble =) enjoy!

The French Branding Experience

for everyone
The French Branding Experience

It all started during the decline of Roman Empire around 400AD Barbaric Hordes were running amok and breaking down the borders of the corrupt and divided Roman Empire. The Franks were among these barbarians, they were noted for their axe throwing skills.

The primary sources for Frankish military custom and armament are Ammianus MarcellinusAgathias, andProcopius, the latter two Eastern Roman historians writing about Frankish intervention in the Gothic War.
Writing of 539, Procopius says:
At this time the Franks, hearing that both the Goths and Romans had suffered severely by the war . . . forgetting for the moment their oaths and treaties . . . (for this nation in matters of trust is the most treacherous in the world), they straightway gathered to the number of one hundred thousand under the leadership of Theudebert and marched into Italy: they had a small body of cavalry about their leader, and these were the only ones armed with spears, while all the rest were foot soldiers having neither bows nor spears, but each man carried a sword and shield and one axe. Now the iron head of this weapon was thick and exceedingly sharp on both sides, while the wooden handles was very short. And they are accustomed always to throw these axes at one signal in the first charge and thus to shatters the shields of the enemy and kill the men.[4]

In the purest sense they were barbarian, from technology to culture but something along the way they found a cause worth pursuing: Freedom. That simple dream became the battle cry of the Frankish people who will later be called the French. That is also the start of their brand of freedom that will influence their political history.

What is notable about the French is that their culture and political history become part of the products and services they market it and have created a niche in luxury items. Really now most French are just simple folk living in houses 200 square meters and below and from my last visit there, they visit Paris as tourists to their own city. The typical frenchman has a simple byt ample lifestyle- our middle class are even more extravagant. French style and finesse can be attributed to their monarchy and to a lesser extent their barons and elites.

From the feudal ages to the Napoleonic era, French rulers are known to get luxuries in excess. The feudal lords and barons of medieval France were referred to as “robber barons”; they went to the crusades and plundered. In the renaissance period Cardinal Richelieu, a patron of the arts expanded the power of the monarchy and was essential to the construction if the Pala is Royale, which later became the Louvre Museum of art. We then have another ruler king Louis XIV who further took extravagance by building the Versailles Palace.
Ironically what the people despised from their rulers, extravagance and shameless luxury even as the majority were not very well off; became the iconic symbol of France and its people. The common man felt that it is part of his heritage and craftsmen and entrepreneurs created products of elegance and quality. The royal culture has diffused into its citizens and they take pride in being “chic”.
This emphasis on luxury and branding made France a dynamic exporter of products despite the high wages, short work hours and expensive costs of production. The very name Paris became a branding feature of its most prolific brands Louis Vinton, Channel, L’Oreal etc. Looking closely at these brands I see that it’s not difficult to reverse engineer them (not that I’m advocating anyone to do such). Personally I don’t see much difference from a Greenhill’s Louis Vinton and one from Paris. It’s just that its prestige is really more of branding than utility- Louis Vuitton embodies the best French Luxury today and subconsciously it brings us images of the monarchy and indulgence, Plus the fact that wealthiest of people carry it enhances its image. A poorly dressed and shabby lady would put any luxury brand to shame. I admire the nationalisim of the French Brands, they even put the French flag in their HQ's

Figure 1: Louis Vuitton HQ Champs Elysees Paris
Paris itself is branded as the most romantic city in the world- a claim which I feel is far overrated. I would support them that they are the centre of old word art, because that’s about it. Our private dinners here at home are the best for me in terms of food quality and service.
I see Paris as a historical city great for backpackers, the Eiffel tower is certainly not a romantic place to date with thousands of tourists just down below the ambience is not that perfect- it does give you great city views. Thanks to branding however it became romantic, it became an end to a means. Want a great honeymoon? Go to Paris! (Personally I Prefer Palawan or Rome)
               French branding inspires me, how they make simple things into elegant and ritualistic objects of significance.  The way they personalize things like pillboxes and try to present your ideals for it- Ask Pauline or Kei;
 Example: Pillboxes for the Traveller
                   Pillboxes for the Mothers etc.
We also have the Perfumes:  Dior’s Miss Dior Cherie with a stylized bottle
Their branding represents aspirations of prestige and lifestyle while sadly, most of our products here still are marketed through features and price cuts.  Let’s forget about the mainstream and seek new markets- I don’t think it’s wise to get it on with war with French marketing- they have hundreds of years of background and brand recall. Let’s look for a marketing and brand proposition that fits the very best of our culture- a culture of utilitarian style and open a window of new opportunities.

Were the only country that has a global culture- we can adapt and absorb everything! I don't know how were going to integrate it all into a theme that is utterly desirable, simple and hard to beat but I do trust the creativity of the Filipino people that soon we will achieve that. –Perhaps then we can give the despicable Thais a run for their money hehehe

I must be dreaming- Literally I was

Blog EntryMay 17, '08 9:42 PM
for everyone
Last night I had a particularly long, detailed and enlightening dream. I was back in 4th year high school, CSA was of international school standards and the Philippines was a developed nation. Let me narrate:
The dream started in the first day of class (possibly the windy and rainy weather triggered subconscious memories of the start of classes). I went to the classroom with a population of 15-20 students. Among my classmates were Gabrielle Conde, Ronald Yu, Alex Unson. April and Brian Matic. In that dream csa had less than 7 sections. We had international school uniforms similar to Brent.  The scene skipped and I recall returning from the flag ceremony, I had a nice business desk with a planner- so did everyone else.
I remembered taking pictures from a digital camera- a luxury at that time. After dismissal I took the subway to makati and saw that the entire manila was centrally planned. i got up and saw a large plaza for commuters. I made a 360 degree turn and saw the Pasig river was clean and used for industrial and commuting barges.  Edsa went underneath that Plaza. there was a nice scene of skyscrapers and the place was clean.

The scene looked almost like this.

On the next day of class our first subject was religion and the professor started a debate on creationism versus evolution. I took the side of evolution. End of dream

Crash Course on French

While having lunch with a finnish business partner a while ago the topic switched to where the family is going to for the summer vacation. With excitement I said we're going to paris next week, - a great place he says then he asks if I know how to speak french. I said no- not even basic conversation.
Then he commented that the french are quite stingy and rude to outsiders but they magically turn hospitable and nice- as in filipino nice if you give an effort to speak their language. Recalling his comment its true that we appreciate foreign people giving an effort to learn and speak our language- the same way our finnish business partner made an effort to study tagalog.
Damn that hit me the I only know a few sentences  and have a superficial french word count nothing beyond the depth of sentences like "comment te la voux?", "bon voyage" "au revoir" etc.
Perhaps in makes sense know to learn a foreign language  even at the basic conversation level, in this age of globalization we will interact more with different peoples and cultures, the arena of strategy has shifted from one of blatant competition to mutual strategy.
Knowing another language also expands your vacation choices hehe
If there is anyone who reads this and lends me a basic french conversation book asap- you get at treat from the Champs Elysees ;)

2 Gangsters Hurting our Economic Growth

Let me put my stand on religion first; I believe religion is a good thing for as long as it promotes human welfare and development. I am aware of religion’s capability to inspire, captivate and make people do good for humanity. Paganism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Shintoism etc. they all have good intentions. In this blog I am attacking the people behind it, not the religion itself.

My opinion on the poor: They are intellectually capable, they are just not doing enough. I also believe that equality must be applied to all, no special treatment in laws and responsibilities.

The 2 Gangsters Hurting our Economic Growth
A.. The Roman Catholic Church Leadership
B. Culture of Poverty

This blog has been very difficult to write because of the following reasons.

1. I don’t know where to start
2. I don’t know if I am going to finish

The two seem to be in a diabolic alliance, two forces that are seemingly tattooed in the Philippine way of life. They have caused deep strife in different cultures halfway across the globe in different eras, now we face them.

1. They have cast the first stone and much more, they “should already be stoned to death with a milestone upon its neck while in the burning lake of sulfur”, I present to you Philippine Roman Catholic Church Leadership.

Now If this would be the first time our Catholic Church should be attacked for what it has been doing in the last 430 + years then it is due. Big time. Personally I never saw our Catholic Church really reform since the time of the Padre Damaso. They are still the conniving, crab mentality, power hungry boat shakers, backseat politicians and preachers of poverty culture.

That felt good. That felt really good.

Connivance with Evil People and Act as Backseat Politicians
I believe many church leaders have become petty connivers to whomever politician or special interest group that asks their “blessing”- and yet they preach all are equal upon God. Like the medieval priests they express their opinion as if it is the way of God. Throughout the years they have endorsed, crooks, plunderers, land grabbers, economic saboteurs etc. etc.

Throughout the years they have made claims on how to run this nation for more equitable distribution of wealth. For many years people have believed them. For many years they have been wrong. Let me give you some cities that had problems with high crime rate, poor city planning and squatters

New York
Paris
Hong Kong
Shanghai
Singapore

Let me give you a short list of nations which had problems with land ownership, feudalism and extreme differences lifestyle of the social classes.
Japan
France
England
China
These countries and cities were run better when corporate leadership and professional planners took over. No religious nonsense whatsoever.

Another current issue that makes my blood boil is the advocacy of 2 Philippine bishops on extending the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Law. The intention is good but that move is stupid. I personally did a research paper on the comprehensive agrarian reform law and it shows that farm Productivity is diminished with that law. Land ownership does not correlate with better production, farmers do not have economies of scale, it would be more expensive to make farm to market roads due to lack of farm planning and the farm inputs become expensive when not bought in bulk. The result? idle land and farmers selling their lots and no one buys.

They are also against biofuels... grrrrr stupidity. gross stupidity.

Did our church admit that they made a mistake? Were scammed? “Nauto”?

Hell no.

Like in the dark ages they never admitted error in judgment.

What else is worse? They still keep on endorsing wrong ideas and wrong people.  Their repeated behavior has become already part of our Filipino Culture. Beyond endorsing I think there is another agenda: Publicity.

The problem with church connivance is their “know it all attitude”, they claim they want welfare but they do not admit that administrating welfare and making rules are well beyond their trained capabilities. The common person is much better- a businessman admits that he can’t do an open heart surgery; a doctor does not claim he can do financial analysis and a visual artist wouldn't’t claim he can build an Eiffel Tower.

The Roman Catholic Church is not capable of making economic and strategic decisions that will seal the fate of the nations for decades. For example, whenever you see a poor child who does not have enough resources for a good headstart in life- put part of the blame on the church due to avoidance of family planning. A priest advised a cousin of mine to let "God" decide how many kids he should have during his daughter's baptisim. After which I asked. Two, he said.

I am confused whether to call it ignorance, stupidity or both, but our challenging and sensitive economic growth is being molded by blabber mouthed church leaders. As leaders I find them impulsive and easily swayed by causes which show lots of misery, they are the Don Quixote’s of drama queens. They may have good intentions but their haphazard decisions are never as good as gold.

Church Crab Mentality
If I lived at least 100 years ago, I would accept the notion that the rich are evil spoiled land grabbers who exploit the poor. Although there are still spoiled brats and evil land grabbers in this country I believe they are the politicians who are the false rich. In this day and time no son/daughter or grandson/daughter will ever keep his inherited wealth if he/she is not capable of years of financial management. I have heard so many stories of old rich clans losing it all, even my clan for a period of time; suffered a decline in financial wealth due to mismanagement.

There are many people who make it rich through hard work, strategy and persistence. I am lucky enough to be part of meetings in the business lounge and each successful man has his story worth knowing. I believe there are so many opportunities and the reason why our people are not improving is because of lack of proper attitude, tenacity and discipline

Now we go to our accused, the Philippine Roman Catholic Church that forever slanders the rich and the middle class. Must they always label those who improve their lives unfair and greedy?

Instead of listening and preaching the examples of excellence to inspire people to improve their lot and to be a help to community they stay to the centuries old teachings that they, especially ones in the upper bracket cheated their way. I would understand them if they isolate those cases but they don’t. Collectively in their eyes those who have more material wealth are evil.

Preachers of Poverty Culture
I would like to critic the biblical writers for mentioning that we should sell all our belongings and distribute them to the poor. The persons who wrote the Bible have limitations unique to their day and age and that is forgivable, but the essence of this act is to uplift the welfare of people through equity.

But this is not in any way sustainable.

What is sustainable is to teach a man how to fish so he doesn’t keep on begging for the rest of his days. – That’s a better way to improve someone’s welfare.

Even Better: Make a corporation, Hire that person and develop him so he realizes his potential. Pay him a premium for his excellent skills so that he can own a home, own a car, have decent meals and send his kids to expensive Catholic Schools (who give regular remittances to the Vatican) so that they can grow up to be defenders of the faith!

The Best: My brothers in Christ, God has provided us with so many opportunities but it is our actions that will make them realizable. I want you to work with all honesty with each other, make corporations, partnerships promise continuous innovation of crafts, services and skills so that you may employ your brethren, make them hone their God given capabilities for the better. Make them realize their full potential and in this way we may glorify God.

Now let’s get back to reality

          “The rich man and Lazarus…”

“it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a                                            needle than a rich man to…”

Those teachings were applicable in a time where to be rich you must be a prince and an unfair landowner, the people who are like that now are the politicians.

Why not emphasize the parable of the Talents where the one who was able to double them gets the better reward?

It sickens me that our church leaders always take the side of the poor as if they are all angels on earth and as if they have always been marginalized and oppressed. The Philippine Roman Catholic Church has sadly coddled them and never reprimanded them for their lack or responsibility. Here’s the truth: All humans are 99.99% genetically alike and those poor fellows have the capability to be responsible and must be responsible. This must be taught-this must be forced, I find it annoying that the church takes the side of the unproductive and militant poor.

To be continued…
